LexNet HomePass: An Overview

Regardless of your internet speed package, your Wi-Fi network can only do so much from a traditional router. Typically placed near the center of your home, your router spreads Wi-Fi signals in all directions, giving you a strong connection in the middle of your home and a weaker one in rooms far away.

But life doesn’t just happen in your living room. That’s why LexNet HomePass (Powered by Plume Homepass®) was developed: to give you a better Wi-Fi experience in every part of your home. Using minimal hardware and a lot of machine learning, LexNet HomePass gives you more robust security, less buffering, and unparalleled control over your network.

Once you’ve opted into LexNet HomePass, you’ll need to download the HomePass by Plume® app to reap the benefits of this smart tech. HomePass is your key to the wonderful world of LexNet HomePass and the hub where your network controls will live. Now, onto the benefits.

LexNet HomePass Benefits

The features you'll find in the HomePass app come from the four components of LexNet HomePass. These are Adapt, Guard, Access, and Sense. Put them all together, and you’ve got some serious control over your network.

Adapt:

One of the greatest benefits of LexNet HomePass is its ability to adapt to your usage. Where Wi-Fi extenders simply re-broadcast your signal to another area of the home, LexNet HomePass learns how you use your connection and will continually balance the load between your Wi-Fi bands.

Without getting too far in the weeds, your Wi-Fi is broken into two frequency bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

The 2.4GHz band can reach devices farther from your router but won’t get as fast of speeds. Devices spread across your home—like smart home systems, smartphones, and smart thermostats—will likely connect to this band. Without LexNet HomePass, this network can become quickly congested with every device that isn't close to your router.

The 5GHz band is faster but has a shorter range than the 2.4GHz band. Your smart TV will likely connect to the 5GHz band if your router is in the living room, and your desktop computer will probably connect if your router is in an office. Devices that typically connect to your 5GHz band include 4K TVs, gaming consoles, and other devices that need a lot of speed and are within a short range of your router.

The key takeaway is this: LexNet HomePass will optimize these bands for you. Within a few days of installation, your LexNet HomePass system will have learned the best way to divide up your speed and bands amongst all your devices. Best of all, the system automatically checks for changes in your usage (like when you connect a new laptop to your network) and will adjust accordingly.

Guard:

We have a lot of important devices on our Wi-Fi networks. Securing these devices should be a top priority. That's why LexNet HomePass actively protects your devices with the latest encryption standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

LexNet HomePass also comes with online protection to block communication from untrusted domains, adblocking, and even quarantines home devices that are acting unusual ("Hey Security Camera, that's a login we don't recognize…you're coming with us.")

Basically, you have access to top-notch security with LexNet HomePass—without lifting a finger.

Access:

Attention all Airbnb hosts, event throwers, and babysitters—LexNet HomePass's "Access" feature is your new best friend. Here are some of the controls you can have over your network.

  1. Limited device access. Hosting a guest who only needs access to the internet and the TV (and not, say, your security cameras)? You can create a guest password with those limitations spelled out. Guests using this password will only have access to devices you've preapproved in the HomePass app.
  2. Access expiration. Sometimes, it's time for a guest to be on their way. Want to make sure they can't come back and reaccess your Wi-Fi? Easy: set their Wi-Fi password to expire. After the expiration, the password they used to log in will no longer work.
  3. Profile Creation. Assign devices to specific profiles. From here, you can filter content, issue internet freezes, and set bedtimes for the youngsters in your home.
  4. Content Filtering. Manage the content your younger guests see with filters like No Adult Content, Teenager Friendly, and Kid Appropriate. The internet is full of easily accessible, inappropriate content. Now you can say, “Not on my Wi-Fi!”
  1. Timeouts, Internet Freezes, & Bedtimes. Set Wi-Fi restrictions for specific profiles to be recurring or as needed. An easy way to keep your child off their gaming station late at night: set their bedtime internet freeze from 10 pm to 7 am—just don’t tell them we suggested it.

Sense:

LexNet HomePass is sometimes called the "Wi-Fi of the Future," for good reason.

Wi-Fi travels across your home via radio waves (those 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands we mentioned earlier). LexNet HomePass has a secret superpower, though: it can use these radio waves to detect movement in your home (i.e., disturbances in the Wi-Fi signals).

In your HomePass app, you can send location-specific alerts to your phone when movement is detected in your house while the status is "away." If you've set up profiles in the app, you can also determine whether a house member is home or away, depending on whether their primary device has been connected to the network within the last 15 minutes.

This is handy for knowing when your kids get home from school or if an elderly parent arrives home safely.

Of course, you can turn off "Sense" in your HomePass app settings anytime.
